Energized PTFE gaskets are seals with various profiles consisting of an outer wrapping that makes the seal, generally made from PTFE compounds or other polymer resins and an energizing element such as a metal spring or elastomer ring. Composite PTFE gaskets for fluids are formed from a modified PTFE ring plus an O-ring selected from various elastomers. The PTFE ring makes a dynamic seal, primarily for alternating rectilinear movements. The O-ring acts as an elastic expansion and static sealing element.
PTFE is a material belonging to the olefin group. Polytetrafluoroethylene is excellent for making mechanical sliding components, given its low coefficient of friction, high resistance to heat and non-flammability. It is an excellent insulating material with high resistance to chemicals and solvents.
