Gaskets are used to match mechanical pieces that do not fit perfectly. Gaskets can:
- compensate for irregularities in the area of support due to the production process
- compensate for defects in flatness on large surfaces
- avoid a reduction of the seal over time
- increase the contact surface between two elements
If the gasket is sufficiently compressible, or if it is possible to adjust the thickness, it can provide a space for calibrating the fixing distance between the two elements. This is very important for the alternating internal combustion engines, allow the precise coupling (such as cylinder/crankcase or cylinder head/cylinder).
